Photo from UAAP Media.MANILA — Buds Buddin came back just in time to help National University reach its 10th straight UAAP Season 87 men’s volleyball Finals appearance.

The 23-year-old ace, who is dealing with a right ankle sprain, returned from a two-game absence to spark the Bulldogs against University of Santo Tomas in a do-or-die Final 4 match.

It was a vital return for the 6-foot-1 outside hitter, especially since they were pushed to the limit by the Golden Spikers who stunned the reigning champions in their first meeting last Saturday.

“Grabe kasi yung struggles talaga,” Buddin, who had seven points, nine receptions, and two wins in their 25-23, 25-23, 25-23 victory over UST on Wednesday at the Araneta Coliseum.

It was also an emotional game for Buddin, who dealt with a broken hand in their Season 86 campaign.

“‘Di ko lang talaga naiwasan maging emotional kasi nakuha namin yung kagustuhan naming mag Finals,” he said. “Alam naming pinaghirapan namin ‘to, kaya ganun yung emosyon ko. Ang dami naming sinakripisyo, at nakita na naming nagbubunga.”

National U took a step closer to its hopes of completing a five-peat, and it is set for a Best-of-3 Finals clash against Far Eastern University.

The Bulldogs put the lone dent into the Tamaraws' elimination round campaign, as the hitters from Jhocson Street took down their Morayta neighbors in five sets last March 30.

Buddin had 16 markers, seven digs, and seven receptions in that victory, but will he be able to replicate that come the finals?

“’Di ko masasabi na 100% ako,” he said. “Sabi ko nga sa coaches namin kanina: ‘‘Pag pinasok niyo po ako, siguro yung power hindi ko maibibigay.’”

“Pero yung skills and yung experience, yun yung ipapakita ko. So sana magtuloy-tuloy na, and sana bumalik yung 100% ko,” he added.

With Buddin still in the process of his recovery, he is now hoping for Leo Ordiales, Jade Disquitado, Leo Aringo, and the rest of the Bulldogs to back him up in the Finals which opens on Sunday, May 11, 1:00 p.m. at the Big Dome.

“’Di ko siya magagawa ng ako lang,” he emphasized. “Yung help ng bawat isa sa amin [ang importante]. ‘Di lang ako yung magli-lead, andyan rin sila Jade at sila Leo.”
