MANILA (UPDATED) — De La Salle University is a win away from the UAAP Season 87 women's volleyball Finals.

The Lady Spikers clinched the Top 2 seed as well as the twice-to-beat advantage in the Final 4 after they defeated University of Santo Tomas, 23-25, 25-20, 30-28, 29-27, in their Playoff for No.2 on Wednesday at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.

Angel Canino finished with 24 points, 12 receptions, and 10 digs to lead the Ramil de Jesus-coached squad, Shevana Laput followed with 22 markers and four digs, while Amie Provido put up five of La Salle's 20 blocks to complete her 10 points.

"Nagtitiwala sila sa akin," said Provido, who also had two digs and a reception in their victory aside from her vital block points and kills. "Before talaga, hindi pa ako ganon ka-kumpyansa sa blocking, pero dahil sa kanila, pinagtsa-tiyagaan nila ako so pinanghuhugutan ko rin yun, na kaya ko."

The Taft-based hitters will now officially enter the Final 4 with the semifinals bonus, and a win by them over third-seed Golden Tigresses on Saturday will send them to the championship stage.

To achieve this, the Lady Spikers erased a 22-17 disadvantage in the fourth set, as errors from UST, as well as blocks from Provido and Alleiah Malaluan, allowed them to tie the game at 22.

Errors from Julyana Tolentino and Laput then resulted in UST regaining composure and holding the match point, 24-22, but La Salle refused to give in just yet.

The two squads then went on to exchange hits and errors in the extended frame, but it was the Lady Spikers who emerged victorious as Lilay Del Castillo met Beth Hilongo at the top of the net, while Laput sealed the victory with a sharp down-the-line hit.

DLSU deputy Noel Orcullo hailed Provido, as well as the rest of the Lady Spikers' net defense which was key in their win.

"Ang ganda ng blocking namin ngayon, nakaka-read na sila," he said. "Kumbaga, yung tine-train naming blocking, nag matter ngayon. Sumusunod na sila sa instructions namin sa kanila, so naging maganda yung sa blocks."

The Lady Spikers' 20 kill blocks were the most by any team so far in the season, according to UAAP statistician Pong Ducanes.

On the other hand, UST, which relied on Angge Poyos' 24 points, Reg Jurado's 12, and Cassie Carballo's 28 sets, will be entering the Final 4 as the third seed.

Unfortunately for UST, the Tigresses weren't able to take advantage of the Lady Spikers' 38 errors to their 24, and it led to them absorbing their second-straight loss after winning four consecutive assignments in Round 2.

The second game of this virtual Best-of-3 series is on Saturday, May 3, 6:00 p.m., at the Araneta Coliseum in Cubao, Quezon City.
