MANILA (UPDATED) — National University reasserted its mastery of University of Santo Tomas to complicate the Golden Tigresses’ twice-to-beat hopes in the UAAP Season 87 Final 4.

The Lady Bulldogs tallied their fifth straight victory over UST dating back from last season after their 23-25, 25-17, 25-18, 22-25, 15-9 win to end their women’s volleyball Round 2 clash on Sunday at the Araneta Coliseum in Quezon City.

Bella Belen’s prowess was in full display for the Jhocson Street-based spikers, putting up 26 points on 24 attacks and two blocks, and this was on top of 17 digs and 13 receptions.

But despite another all-around performance from Belen in their 12th win in 14 games, what mattered for her the most was how her teammates stepped up in the 2-hour, 24-minute match.

"Nakikita ko na lumalaban yung teammates ko kahit na ganoon na kapagod, actually, nakakapagod talaga yung game," she said after the game.

"Nakita rin talaga namin yung UST na gusto rin talaga nila manalo, pero yung teammates ko, hindi ko nakitaan ng takot sa mata nila. Kahit pagod kami, gagawin namin lahat para manalo kami."

"Kahit na nakuha sa amin 'yung fourth set, hindi ako nag-doubt na makukuha namin yung fifth set, na ipapanalo namin yung game," she added of how they ended the game with a 6-to-2 spurt despite only holding a 9-7 advantage midway through the decider.

Aside from Belen, Alyssa Solomon was solid with 23 points and six digs, and Vange Alinsug also stood out with a 19-point, nine-dig performance on top of two receptions.

These helped NU further solidify its place at the top as it improved to 12-2, and it will be facing Far Eastern University come playoff time.

On the other hand, this Tigresses (9-5) defeat set them up for a virtual Best-of-3 series with De La Salle University (9-5).

UST and DLSU will battle on Wednesday, 2:00 p.m., at the Mall of Asia Arena to determine the No.2 squad. The winner will be equipped with the twice-to-beat bonus in the Final 4.

Despite the loss, Reg Jurado had 19 points, 12 digs, and seven receptions to lead the Tigresses, and providing help were Angge Poyos and Beth Hilongo who had 15 and 12, respectively.
