With her help, the Lady Spikers are now at 6-3 after a slow start, and they are even now at solo second while also being winners of five of their last six games in between Rounds 1 and 2.
Their latest victory was against University of Santo Tomas which they finally defeated after four straight losses, and it was Provido who sealed that five-set triumph with a block.
”I’m just happy with our performance,” said the 5-foot-11 middle blocker, who rejected Reg Jurado to complete her 12 points, two digs, and two receptions. “Nakita ko na gustong-gusto naming manalo, so binigay ko lang yung makakaya ko.”
Provido is currently the league’s third-best blocker with an average of 0.61 per set — as University of the East’s Riza Nogales sits at first (0.89), and National University’s Alyssa Solomon at second (0.61) — but it is not only in the UAAP wherein the Ilongga Ace has been turning heads.
Alongside Angel Canino, Shevana Laput, and Alleiah Malaluan, Provido has received an invite for tryouts as a part of Alas Pilipinas’ 33-player ‘wishlist’
“Thankful ako sa opportunity, pero nagulat ako na andoon yung name ko,” Provido said of that development.
This gives her an opportunity to join her present teammates but also some of La Salle’s best alumni in Mars Alba, Dawn Catindig, Justine Jazareno, Thea Gagate, and Fifi Sharma.
“Kung mabigyan ng chance na magkakasama kami, andoon yung connection talaga,” Provido said. “We understand each other na.”
But for now, Provido’s focus is on the championship-seeking Lady Spikers.
“Pero nasa season kami ngayon, so dito muna kami magfo-focus, ito muna yung uunahin namin,” she said.
Still, Provido acknowledged that what factored in her invite was how she is continuously embracing the weight of being La Salle’s top middle.
“Thankful ako to be a part of that history, na ako na yung first MB ng La Salle,” when asked about being named in the same sentence with the likes of Aby Maraño, Mika Reyes, Majoy Baron, Gagate, and Sharma. “So ako, itutuloy ko lang kung ano yung sinasabi ng coaches namin para sa akin.
