MANILA (UPDATED) — University of the Philippines made quick work of University of the East to tally back-to-back wins in Round 2 of the UAAP Season 87 women's volleyball tournament.

After upsetting National University last Wednesday, the Fighting Maroons dumped the Lady Warriors, 25-21, 25-18, 25-17, during their Sunday afternoon clash at the Araneta Coliseum in Cubao, Quezon City.

State U improved to 5-5 in the team standings, enough for solo fifth, and helping them reach this were Joan Monares (15 points, six digs, five receptions) and Irah Jaboneta (13 points, nine digs, eight receptions).

Despite the sweep, Jaboneta remained unsatisfied with their performance.

"Shaky yung start namin. Even nung patapos na, medyo may mga galaw pa na hindi naman dapat kailangan," she commented. "So siguro, ginawa lang namin kung ano yung dapat. Binabawi ‘yung mga pagkakamali."

Also a standout in UP's win were Kianne Olango and Kassy Doering who each scored eight points, while Julia de Leon tossed all but one of the Maroons' 15 excellent sets.

Tied at five in the third frame, it was Jaboneta, Doering, Olango, and Monares who created the 12-5 cushion for UP, and this was all they needed to eventually shut off their opponents and move up to .500.

Both teams had 21 errors in the contest, but it was the Maroons who managed to get the upper hand as they dominated UE in the attacking department, 42-30, and they also showed prowess in receiving, 22-25.

Unfortunately for the Recto-based spikers, this resulted in them remaining winless in 10 outings.

Adding to UE's woes, they are also now eliminated from Final 4 contention. The most wins that they could get are four, and there are also now five teams that have at least five wins.

The last time that the Lady Warriors made the semifinals was in Season 69 in 2007.

Van Bangayan was the lone UE player in double digits, putting up 13 points with a dig.
