MANILA (UPDATED) — De La Salle University posted a statement victory after outlasting University of Santo Tomas in an intense five-setter.

The Lady Spikers returned to the win column after they overcame the Golden Tigresses, 15-25, 25-17, 24-26, 25-20, 16-14, during their UAAP Season 87 women's volleyball Round 2 face off, Saturday evening at the Araneta Coliseum in Quezon City.

Angel Canino put up 27 points, 13 digs, and 13 receptions, and she managed to do this despite having the need to immediately leave the Big Dome for injury preventive measures.

"After the game, siyempre emotional, tapos actually, naapektuhan rin siya nung tinamaan siya ni Shevana [Laput] sa batok," said Lady Spikers deputy Noel Orcullo after the contest when asked for an update on Canino's condition.

"Parang nahihilo, tapos sinasabi nila na si Angel, hindi maganda yung [kondisyon], so kinuha agad ng mga PT namin at ng mga doktor namin."

Laput also stepped up for La Salle, putting up 16 markers and four digs, while Amie Provido provided help with 12 points, two digs, and two receptions.

"This time, ginusto talaga naming lahat. Lahat nag step up," said Provido, who helped the Lady Spikers improve to 6-3 and earn a share of second place in the league standings with Far Eastern University.

"Hindi dapat kami maging complacent. Nung first round, ahead na kami ng 2-0, pero hindi namin nakuha yung game. Ngayon, kinapitan talaga namin hanggang dulo," she added.

Tied at 14 in the decider, Laput gave the Lasallians the crucial match point, 15-14, all thanks to her off-speed attack.

Provido then went on to ice the match in their next possession after she blocked Reg Jurado's crosscourt attempt.

Canino burst into tears after the final point and was immediately helped off the court by the La Salle staff and taken to an ambulance.

The win snapped La Salle's four-game slide against the Golden Tigresses which dates back to Season 86.

UST now sits at 5-4 in the team standings, and this was despite Jurado's 22 points, 14 digs, and six receptions, Angge Poyos' 12 markers, four receptions, and three digs, and Cassie Carballo's 27 excellent sets with four points and five digs.
