MANILA (UPDATED) — De La Salle University successfully returned to the win column of the UAAP Season 87 women’s volleyball tournament all thanks to the leadership of Angel Canino.

The Lady Spikers frustrated University of the Philippines, 25-22, 26-24, 25-18, 25-17, during their Sunday afternoon faceoff at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay to improve to 2-2 in the team standings.

Canino powered La Salle to avoid the upset, putting up 24 points on 20 attacks and four blocks, while also tallying five digs and four receptions.

"Kahit na galing po kami sa talo, and yung standing namin parang on edge din, parang yung mindset talaga namin is one day at a time lang," said the one-time UAAP MVP.

"Ang maganda ngayon is may nagkakaroon na rin kami ng kumpyansa as a team and sa sarili kaya sana madala dala din po namin yun every game," added Canino, who powered La Salle in the third set when UP was threatening to go over them.

Shevana Laput was just as instrumental, posting 20 points and five receptions, and she believes that the Lady Spikers are finally starting to turn things in their favor.

"I believe that our team is going in the right direction," she said. "We all just need to keep contributing, keep sticking to our system and doing our best because the fruits will come."

As La Salle was facing an 8-3 disadvantage in the third set, Canino, as well as Baby Jyne Soreño and Lilay del Castillo, put some life back into their charge to take a 2-1 set advantage while also opening the third frame, 4-0.

The Taft-based hitters then saw themselves only leading 16-15 in the fourth, but Canino, Laput, and del Castillo spearheaded a nine-to-two closing run which allowed them to bounce back from their defeat vs. University of Santo Tomas last Wednesday.

On the other hand, this was the second straight defeat of State U as they faltered against Ateneo de Manila University before this contest.

Irah Jaboneta, paced them with 15 markers, 11 receptions, and eight digs, while Joan Monares backed her up with 11 points.
