MANILA, Philippines (UPDATED) – Petro Gazz will advance to the quarterfinals of the 2024-25 Premier Volleyball League (PVL) All-Filipino Conference.

The Angels routed Capital1 in the qualifying round, 25-19, 25-23, 25-21, to secure a postseason ticket on Saturday at the PhilSports Arena in Pasig City.

The opener, which went in favor of the Angels, ended with a 7-2 finishing kick as they rallied from the 18-17 count, concluded by a service ace from Brooke Van Sickle and an antenna fault from the Solar Spikers.

In the next frame, the Roger Gorayeb-coached squad somehow managed to claw its way back from a 23-20 Petro Gazz advantage, closing in at 24-23 after a checkball hit from Leila Cruz and attack error from Myla Pablo, but a lefty spike from Aiza Maizo-Pontillas ended the 31-minute Set 2 for a 2-0 lead.

Gorayeb's wards still tried to turn things around late in Set 3, uncorking three unanswered points from the 23-17 mark, but a service error from Cruz put Petro Gazz at match point, as Ethan Arce fired the game-winning off-the-block kill to complete the straight-set triumph.

"It's good. I thought Capital1 did a fantastic job. They definitely came fighting today," said Van Sickle during the postgame press conference.

Three Angels were at the forefront of the Petro Gazz offense, led by the reigning All-Filipino Conference MVP with 19 points built on 15 attacks, two blocks and two aces, including 14 excellent receptions and nine excellent digs; Myla Pablo added 17 points on 15 attacks, while MJ Phillips had 12 markers and listed a whopping five blocks.

They are also on a 10-game winning streak — definitely a confidence-boost, but not a reason to relax, according to Van Sickle.

"To be able to have 10 [wins] is good for confidence. But we can't relax. It doesn't matter at this point. There are still more games ahead. We just have to keep pushing and improving. It's a long journey still," she stressed.

In one of her best games, Cruz delivered 16 points on 15 attacks and a block, while captain Jorelle Singh joined her opposite spiker in twin-digit scoring territory with 10.

For their part, the Solar Spikers will need to overcome their play-in opponents to advance to the playoffs.
