Angel Canino and Alleiah Malaluan led the Ramil de Jesus-coached squad to a sweep of Shaina Nitura and Adamson University on Saturday, with the duo towing the Lady Spikers to its first win of the year.

This came less than a week from their defeat against defending champions National University, and De Jesus admitted that their three-set mishap against the Lady Bulldogs was due to his team lacking confidence in that matchup.

“Nung first game namin, kulang kami sa paniniwala sa sarili namin,” said RDJ after the contest.

“[Nawala] yung, pagdating sa loob ng court, yung confidence nila. Last Sunday, ‘di ganon eh. Although nangangapa, at tiwala naman ako na andoon sila, pero yung kulang eh, yung sarili nila, na dapat maipakita nila,” he continued.

It was a rare opening day loss for de Jesus and the Lady Spikers, and Malaluan admitted that it left a sour taste in their mouths.

“During those days, andoon yung pain,” she said after posting a team-high 16 points.

However, Malaluan emphasized that they focused on the lessons that they got from the rare sweep that they absorbed, instead of dwelling on it.

“At the same time sabi nga ni coach: ‘Walang matatalo, lahat may natutunan.’ We didn’t take that as a loss kasi nga may natutunan kami, and at the same time, that loss became a motivation for us,” she explained.

Canino vouched for this, saying that it helped them regain their focus as they prepared for the Lady Falcons.

“Kung nasa isip mong natalo ka, hindi ka makaka-move forward sa next games,” the one-time UAAP MVP said.

“Nung day na yun, dinamdam namin yun as a team and as individuals pero kinailangan naming mag move forward,” she added.

La Salle went on to show composure against a tough stand from Nitura and Adamson as they were able to overcome every fightback that the Lady Falcons threw at them in each and every set.

And this, according to Canino, can be credited to how they blocked out the noise that would have clouded their squad if they didn’t respond.

“Kailangang i-stop na namin yung mga negative na comments na naririnig namin, at yung negative thoughts na meron kami,” she said

La Salle will now hope to sustain this when they return to the taraflex on Wednesday against the University of Santo Tomas at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay.
