MANILA, Philippines – Amid concerns over the rising heat index, Rio Dela Cruz of running events organizer Runrio said Friday that measures are in place to help runners combat hot weather during races.

As Runrio hosts another event, the Rexona Metro Manila 10 Miler Series which will traverse across Metro Manila cities, Dela Cruz expressed the organization's readiness to help participants, sharing that their mindset is being "prepared for the worst."

"Of course, we prepare for the worst and most importantly, we plan for it and we're ready for potential incidents," Dela Cruz told reporters.

Dela Cruz said they will increase the water allocation for runners during their events.

The first leg of the deo brand's Metro Manila 10 Miler Series will be held at the Quirino Grandstand in Manila on April 6.

State weather bureau PAGASA said last Monday that it's possible to have the warm and dry season by mid-March to April.

"'Yung nakalagay sa Plan B namin is number one, add more ice. Magdadagdag tayo ng ilang percent sa usual na allocation na hydration per runner. Kasi minsan 'pag ganito 'yung panahon, normally 'yung hydration, 'yung water pang-inom lang. By this time, by March, April, and May, normally nagiging doble 'yung consumption nila," said Dela Cruz.

"So dalawang beses sila umiinom, at the same time kailangan namin mag-prepare for the runners ng gagamitin na pambuhos ng katawan para mag-cooldown sila."

Runrio's Dela Cruz also said that it's possible to have the gun starts for the races to be adjusted depending on the heat index.

"But of course, titingnan namin 'yung heat index 'pag malapit na 'yung race, baka i-adjust namin 'yung gunstart. Kasi siyempre 'pag masyado tayong late mag-start, masyado nang tirik 'yung araw sa mga medyo late na mag-finish, so we want na medyo shaded pa rin 'yung crowd natin for them."

He also added that every water station during the race will have a medical team, assuring immediate attention to runners who might succumb to the hot weather.

"And of course, 'yung medical team natin will always be there. Every hydration or water station, we will be having a medical team and ambulance to support. And meron din tayong mga routine na gagawin; but hoping na walang mangyari."
