MANILA -- Brothers Carlos and Karl Eldrew Yulo are both looking to represent the Philippines in the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles, where they hope to build on the older gymnast's successful campaign in Paris.

Carlos made history in 2024 when he won two gold medals -- in vault and floor exercise -- in the Paris Olympics to highlight the country's most successful campaign.

For his unprecedented achievement, Carlos was named the 2024 Athlete of the Year by the Philippine Sportswriters Association (PSA) on Monday night at the Manila Hotel. Karl Eldrew, 17, was also present at the ceremony as he received a special citation.

"Gusto ko rin 'yung ganiyang award— Athlete of the year," Karl Eldrew said in a joint interview with his brother. "I'm so proud of him. Always. I cried so much noong Olympics, siyempre that's his dream and also my dream. So parang na-achieve niya rin 'yung dream ko."

Carlos, who is training with his brother at The GAP Training Center in Intramuros, says Eldrew has made great progress in his skills.

"Malaki po mga naging improvement niya sa training. Gumagaling na po siya sa mga favorite events niya. Super proud po," the two-time Olympian said.

Both of them are setting their sights on LA 2028, though Carlos acknowledges that the road will not be easy.

"Posible po and sobrang saya po noon for sure na dalawa kaming makakatungtong ng Olympics at dalawa kaming magrerepresent ng Philippines," Carlos said.

"Sobrang exciting at the same time magiging challenging. Para sa amin hindi po madali 'yung process. Pagpasok doon nagp-pray po ako na makapasok po kaming dalawa," Carlos shared.

For Eldrew, the key to achieving this would be to push beyond his limits everyday.

"I will make everything possible though it seems impossible," Eldrew said. "I'm gonna push myself through limits everyday."

For 2025, the older Yulo is set to compete in the Asian Championships and the Southeast Asian Games, while Eldrew has lined up several competitions, including the World Junior Championships that will be hosted by the Philippines.
