The diminutive gymnast -- Yulo stands at 4-foot-11 -- was larger than life when he competed in the 2024 Paris Olympics in August. There, the 24-year-old rewrote the record books by winning not one, but two gold medals for the Philippines.

To get there, she had to overcome a hometown bet in Wassila Lkhadiri, and she did so in thrilling fashion by winning via split decision.

Meanwhile, the veteran Nesthy Petecio continued to show her quality. Three years after winning silver in Tokyo, Petecio took home a bronze this time after making it to the semis of the women's 57kg weight class. Petecio is now the only boxer in Philippine history with multiple Olympic medals.

He was caught on CCTV firing a gun on another man in September; he eventually surrendered to the police before getting freed on bail. Amores has since been suspended by the PBA -- albeit for just one conference. The Games and Amusements Board has since confirmed that they have revoked Amores' license, putting his future as a professional basketball player in limbo.

Redemption for National University, University of the Philippines
The University of the Philippines and the De La Salle University battle in Game 3 of the UAAP Season 87 men's basketball finals in Quezon City on December 15, 2024. After a handful of near-misses, the Creamline Cool Smashers finally got their long-awaited Grand Slam in the 2024 season of the Premier Volleyball League. A heart-stopping five-set win against Cignal HD in the finals of the Invitational Conference was the cherry on top of the sundae for the Cool Smashers, who added a 10th trophy to their already overflowing cabinet.

Meralco endured plenty of heartbreak before finally earning a breakthrough PBA title in June. To do it, they stunned powerhouse San Miguel Beer in six games in the Finals of the All-Filipino Conference. Chris Newsome cemented his place as the franchise's cornerstone by hitting the go-ahead jumper in Game 6, in the process exorcising ghosts of Finals past.

In the aftermath of his triumphs in Paris, netizens dug up his issues with his family, which threatened to overshadow his golden achievements. The gymnast eventually released a statement -- via TikTok -- wherein he urged his mother to move past their issues. He also saluted his father during the homecoming parade for Olympians in Manila.
