MANILA (UPDATED) — The Converge FiberXers victoriously opened the PBA Season 49 Commissioner’s Cup quarterfinals for a virtual twice-to-beat advantage.

Cheick Diallo led his team to a 130-118 victory over the Rain or Shine ElastoPainters in Game 1 of their Best-of-3 faceoff, Wednesday afternoon at the Araneta Coliseum in Cubao, Quezon City.

The former New Orleans Pelican had 35 points with 17 rebounds, three blocks, and three assists as he took advantage of an E-Painters squad that saw their import Deon Thompson foul out in the third period.

"Game 1 pa lang 'to, so we need to close this one out on Friday," said Converge head coach Franco Atienza after the game. "Hopefully, wala kaming slow start sa Friday.

The FiberXers trailed by 17 in the first half, but quickly came alive and made it a ball game before going on to dominate in the final period.

They eventually distanced themselves by as much as 17 as well in the final quarter.

Helping Converge complete this, aside from Diallo, were Justin Arana’s 22-point, eight-rebound game, Jordan Heading’s 21 markers — 15 of which came from beyond the arc — and nine assists, as well as Schonny Winston (17 points), and  Alec Stockton and Justine Baltazar who each scored 13.

It was only a 105-104 game in favor of the FiberXers early in the fourth, but Arana and Diallo put in the work for their squad, while an emphatic slam by Baltazar over Beau Belga at the 3:50 mark capped off their 17-to-4 run for a 122-108 lead.

This eventually was all Converge needed to fend off the Yeng Guiao-coached team, and they can close out the series on Friday, February 7, at 7:30 p.m. when they battle in Game 2 at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium in Manila.

On the other hand, Tiongson led RoS with a 23-point game on top of three rebounds and two assists. Unfortunately, these weren’t enough to support the hole that Thompson left after fouling out early in the third period.

The Scores:

Converge 130 – Diallo 35, Arana 22, Heading 21, Winston 17, Stockton 13, Baltazar 13, Delos Santos 4, Santos 3, Racal 2, Ambohot 0.

Rain or Shine 118 – Tiongson 23, Asistio 14, Nocum 14, Thompson 14, Datu 12, Clarito 10, Ildefonso 9, Caracut 8, Lemetti 6, Belga 5, Santillan 3.

Quarterscores: 26-39, 64-62, 99-96, 130-118
