This development occurred on Saturday, less than a day before their PBA Season 49 Commissioner’s Cup game against the San Miguel Beermen on Sunday, but the 6-foot-7 star was seen in street clothes during the actual bout, much like how it has been for him since dealing with a calf injury in early 2024.

Despite this, Ginebra head coach Tim Cone assured that his high-flying Gilas Pilipinas forward is 100% healthy for on-court return.

“He’s healthy, he’s ready to go,” said Cone following their 93-81 victory over San Miguel at the Araneta Coliseum during the postgame interviews.

However, Coach Tim pointed out that it could still take time before the 28-year-old actually laces his sneakers and provides length for the Gin Kings.

“But he’s not in the proper game shape yet. He’s not in the proper rhythm to play. [His return] depends on how he practices the next few days,” said Cone.

After suffering the injury in April 2024, one which came in the dying seconds of their past 95-88 victory over the NorthPort Batang Pier in Season 48, Malonzo has missed stints with Gilas, as well as the Season 49 Governors’ Cup.

This meant that it has been over nine months since the former De La Salle University star suited up for Ginebra, which is why, according to Cone, he needs a lot of reps before playing again.

“It could be any game, and right now, he’s healthy and he’s cleared by the trainers, but right now, it’s really about getting into game shape for him,” said Coach Tim. “We don’t wanna go in with him not being in shape and risk injury again. We wanna make sure that he’s in 100% shape before he comes back.”

Ginebra still has NorthPort, the Blackwater Bossing, the TNT Tropang GIGA, the Rain or Shine ElastoPainters, and the Meralco Bolts before they conclude their elimination round campaign.
