MANILA -- Reyland Torres of the University of the Philippines will not be suspended for Game 3 of the UAAP Season 87 men's basketball Finals against De La Salle University.

This, despite incurring two unsportsmanlike fouls in the Fighting Maroons' 76-75 defeat to the Green Archers in Game 2 of the best-of-3 series on Wednesday night at the Mall of Asia Arena.

The UAAP explained on Thursday why the UP guard was able to escape suspension.

"The first unsportsmanlike foul occurred with 5:33 remaining in the third quarter, when Torres committed a UF category 2 (excessive, hard contact caused by a player in an effort to play the ball or an opponent) on EJ Gollena," said the league.

"The second unsportsmanlike foul happened with 2:58 left in the game, when Torres attempted to stop a fast break (UF category 4 - illegal contact caused by the player from behind or laterally on an opponent who is progressing toward the basket, with no other defenders between the player and the basket)," they added.

"Because of the nature of the second foul, Torres will be eligible to play in Game 3."

According to the UAAP, Torres' situation is similar to that of Adamson's Jhon Calisay back on November 23, 2024.

Torres had five points in Game 2, which the Fighting Maroons lost despite taking a nine-point lead in the fourth quarter.

Four missed free throws and a turnover by Francis Lopez in the closing minutes proved costly for UP, who also had no answer down the stretch for two-time Most Valuable Player Kevin Quiambao.

The winner-takes-all Game 3 is set for Sunday at the Araneta Coliseum.
