(UPDATED) Filipina weightlifter Vanessa Sarno made a quick exit in the women's 71kg division after three failed attempts in the snatch on Friday at the South Paris Arena (early Saturday in Manila).

Sarno was the last member of the Philippine weightlifting to see action in the 2024 Paris Olympics, after John Ceniza and Elreen Ando.

But like Ceniza in the men's 61kg weight class, Sarno failed to make a single lift and became the first competitor to bow out of contention.

Sarno, who is making her Olympic debut, thrice failed to lift 100kg in the snatch, and will no longer compete in the clean&jerk.

Her result ends the Philippines' streak of weightlifting medals in the Olympics, with the great Hidilyn Diaz having won silver in Rio de Janeiro in 2016 and a historic gold in Tokyo in 2021.

American Olivia Reeves emerged as the gold medalist with a total lift of 262kg, including an Olympic record of 117kg in the snatch.

Colombia's Mari Leivis Sanchez lifted a total of 257kg for the silver, while Ecuador's Angie Paola Palacios Dajomes was one kilogram back to settle for bronze.

Still only 20 years old, Sarno has already proven herself at the regional and continental level before qualifying for the Paris Games.

She won gold in the 2021 and 2023 Southeast Asian Games in her weight class, and has won gold and silver at the Asian Championships as well.

Sarno qualified for the Olympics through a fifth place finish in the IWF World Cup in April 2024.
