MANILA – President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. said Wednesday he would consult two-time Olympic Gold medalist Carlos Yulo on how the government could better support athletes and boost the Philippines’ medal haul in international competitions.

In an interview in Masantol, Pampanga, the President was asked if the government would add to the numerous incentives Yulo is expected to receive.

"I don’t see why not. He deserves everything that anybody is willing to give him," Marcos said.

"He has already P 20 million… Hindi na siguro siya mangangailangan ng pera, pero para sa akin ang interest ko dumami ang medalist kagaya niya."

The Philippine leader said Yulo was “the best person” to consult on the needs of Filipino athletes. 

“Actually dahil may monetary reward na sya kung saan-saan nanggagaling, ang talagang, pagka nagkita kami, itatanong ko sa kanya, ano ba maitutulong ng pamahalaan para mas dumami ang ating mga medalists sa Olympics at nadaanan nya lahat yan, he went to the Tokyo Olympics, he has now won his two gold medals in the Paris Olympics kaya’t ano pa ang aming gagawin,” he said. 

“Because alam naman natin, itong mga atleta, hindi lang sarili ang kanilang iniisip. Kung hindi pagandahin pa at mas maging maganda pa ang performance dun sa sport nila at dun sa sport ng Pilipinas. So that is really, I think, a more significant effort and that’s why I will ask Caloy Yulo kung ano ba talaga sa palagay nya, ano pa ang pwedeng gawin ng pamahalaan para dumami ang ating medalya.”

Yulo is set to receive a cash incentive of P20 million from the Philippine government as mandated by Republic Act 10699.

He will also receive a house and lot from the Philippine Olympic Committee and an Olympic Medal of Valor from the Philippine Sports Commission. 

These are on top of the various rewards and financial incentives  amounting to millions of pesos pledged by several businesses and corporations.
