MANILA -- Carlos Yulo's victories in the Paris Olympics have brought not only honor to the country, but also pressure to his younger siblings who are both attempting to follow in his footsteps.

Both Karl Eldrew and Elaiza are budding gymnasts who have already begun to make a name for themselves at the local level, with triumphs in the Palarong Pambansa.

Elaiza says that bearing the Yulo name has raised the expectations for them, with Filipinos expecting them to win every tournament.

Elaiza recently won several gold medals in the 2024 Palarong Pambansa in Cebu after excelling in three apparatus -- uneven bars, balance beam, and floor exercise. She also claimed the individual all-around title and led the National Capital Region to the team gold.

"Sobrang nakaka-proud po and at the same time nakaka-pressure, like every competition po hindi mawawala yung pressure sa amin ni Kuya Eldrew," she said.

Eldrew, who dominated the 2024 Palaro, has already begun to compete internationally. Last May, he won a gold medal in the junior finals of the vault event in the 2024 Asian Gymnastics Union Artistic Gymnastics Championships in Uzbekistan.

According to Eldrew, every time Caloy wins, people expect him to do the same.

"Pagkapanalo ni Kuya, right after manalo, there are a few people messaging me congrats, ikaw naman ang susunod; congrats, Drew, ikaw naman next; aabangan kita; syempre sobrang nakaka-pressure yun kasi nage-expect kaagad sila ng mataas," Eldrew said.

But it's not only the Yulo siblings who are now feeling the pressure of lofty expectations. According to the operations manager of the Gymnastics Association of the Philippines (GAP) Gym, Bea Eusuya, the Filipinos have the build for gymnastics.

"Yung build ng Filipino is perfect for this sport; you don't have to be tall," she said.

She added that ever since Caloy won the double gold, interest in the sport has greatly increased, and more people have been inquiring about how to join GAP.

"Ang dami nag-inquire, what is gymnastics, how to secure classes, but yung second gold medal, grabe, as in nagla-lag na yung Facebook ng GAP, inquiring for classes, how much is the membership. That was like 12 midnight, even until 3am, nag-iinquire about classes," she said.

Carlos Yulo rewrote Philippine sporting history in the 2024 Paris Olympics when he won both the floor exercise and vault gold in men's artistic gymnastics, in the process becoming the first Filipino athlete to win multiple medals in a single Games.
