MANILA - Some serious money is coming to Filipino gymnast Carlos Yulo after his historic triumph in the 2024 Paris Olympics.

Yulo became the first Filipino athlete to win multiple medals in a single Olympics after he ruled both the vault and floor exercise in the men's artistic gymnastics over the weekend at the Bercy Arena.

He is guaranteed at least P10-million from the Philippine government, under Republic Act 10699. The House of Representatives has also pledged P3 million, and private companies are also giving Yulo incentives -- including a multi-million peso condominium unit from a property developer.

Asked what he intends to do with all that he will receive, Yulo said: "I am gonna save it and invest also."

"I'm not a forever athlete po," Yulo told reporters after the vault finals. "I have to take care of my personal life also and balance it also."

"And of course, share it sa mga bata po na gustong mag-gymnastics," he added.

Even more rewards are expected to come in the following days, and the City of Manila is already preparing a hero's welcome for Yulo starting at Leveriza Street in Malate where he grew up.

A grateful Yulo said he is proud of himself for never giving up despite his struggles and challenges, as his journey eventually led to two gold medals in the Paris Games.

"Kung paano ko 'to nakuha, hindi naging madali rin. Sobrang dami kong obstacles na napagdaanan, sobrang daming paghihirap. Sobrang daming luha, dugo't pawis 'yung inalay ko dito," said the gymnast.

"Isa lang 'to sa mga blessings mula kay God and sa pagpupursige ko. Hindi ako sumuko, hindi ako tumigil, pinaglaban ko kung ano 'yung pangarap ko sa buhay," he added. -- with a report from Dyan Castillejo, POC Media/ABS-CBN News
