MANILA  – The family of gymnast Carlos Yulo is celebrating his golden achievement at the Paris Olympics.

The grandmother of Carlos Yulo, Angelita Poquiz, said most of the family watched the competition together in their home in Malate, Manila.

She said she got shocked to hear cheers from their neighbors when Carlos was announced as the winner at the floor exercise finals in men's artistic gymnastics on Saturday.

(When one of the announcers in Paris shouted, our champion Caloy Yulo, that's when people started screaming. I did not know they [our neighbors] were also watching. I thought we were the only ones watching. It turns out everyone here in the area were watching his performance. They all went here after the announcement.)

She was happy to find out her grandson, who she helped take care of when he was younger, finally achieved his dream.

"Masaya tapos medyo naiyak siyempre.

(I'm happy and teary-eyed of course. I guess it's because I was ecstatic with what happened. We didn't think he would get gold. Congrats you were able to get what you wanted, but we hope you don't change.)

The father of Carlos Yulo, Mark Andrew, admits he was nervous while watching his son's performance.

Despite being on duty in the barangay, he made sure to catch his son's match.

Stick landing lagi parang may pandikit lang yung paa," he told ABS-CBN News.

(I was nervous but happy since he performed his best routine. He had few hops in his floor. It was so beautiful last night, his performance was great. It was always a stick landing, as if he had glue on his feet.)

He said he was happy when he found out his son finally won an Olympic gold medal, a dream he has been pursuing since he was a kid.

"Masaya, mangiyak-ngiyak.

(I was happy but teary-eyed. I think he used his loss in 2021 in Tokyo as motivation so he could win in the 2024 [Paris] Olympics.)

The Yulo patriarch also thanked his son's former coaches for helping him reach where he is now.

(We owe a lot to Coach Munehiro Kuigimiya. Thank you Coach Mune. Caloy will not be able to reach the Olympics without Coach Munehiro. Also Coach [Ricardo] Otero, he was the coach of Caloy when he was younger, competing in the Palarong Pambansa.)

He also told ABS-CBN News that Carlos is hopeful his siblings, who are also competitive gymnasts, can compete alongside him in the Olympics someday.

[Napaguusapan] tuwing magttraining sila, nagbobonding yung magkapatid," the elder Yulo said.

(The dream of Caloy is that all three siblings will compete together at the 2028 [Los Angeles] Olympics. That's Caloy's dream, the dream of all three of them. They talk about it when they train together, bond together as siblings.)

The younger siblings of Carlos Yulo congratulated him for his achievement.

"Sobrang daming atleta na gusto maging kagaya niya. Like me, gusto ko rin maging Olympian. Nakakakilabot. It gives hope for me na posible kaya ko rin gawin yun," Karl Eldrew Yulo told ABS-CBN News.

(There are so many athletes that want to be like him [Carlos]. Like me, I also want to be an Olympian. One thing that really makes me proud is that Filipino gymnasts made their mark at the Olympics and it's my older brother. He's the best in the whole world in floor exercise. Of course it makes me happy it's my older brother. It gives me goosebumps. It gives me hope that it's possible for me to also do that.)

The 16-year-old gymnast said he had a gut feeling Carlos would win.

Almost perfect score. Gymnasts barely make that almost perfect. Puro stick eh sobrang lines ng execution niya," Karl Eldrew shared.

(When he performed I knew that he would win. He got a 15, almost perfect, almost perfect score. Gymnasts barely make that almost perfect [score]. He mostly did stick landings and his execution was clean.)

Elaiza Yulo, 14, said her brother made the country and Philippine gymnastics community proud.

"Sobrang nakakaproud po and nakakakilabot. Kasi first time marinig ang national anthem sa Olympic podium po ng gymnastics. And yung gold po na napanalunan niya po ay first time in history po," she told ABS-CBN News.

(I'm very proud and I feel goosebumps. It's the first time our national anthem was hear on the Olympic podium in gymnastics. The gold he [Carlos] won is also the first in history.)

The Yulo siblings are hopeful more support will be shown for gymnastics and aspiring athletes in the provinces.

(Maybe this time we really need to support sports like this [gymnastics]. There are a lot of sports that don't get supported much like gymnastics. Hopefully they can also support gymnasts in the province. Gymnasts in the province don't have enough equipment [to train].)

The two shared their messages for their brother ahead of the men's vault finals.

"Galing galing mo kuya. Proud na proud ako sa'yo. Pagpatuloy mo lang yan and hintayin mo kami. Or tatlo tayo even better, tatlo tayong Yulo," Karl Eldrew said.

(You are so good, older brother. I am very proud of you. Just continue what you are doing and wait for us. Wait for me because in 2028, both of us will be at the Olympics. Or three of us, even better, there will be three Yulos.)

And congrats," Elaiza said.

(We are always here to support you no matter what happens. And congratulations.)

The Yulo family is hopeful they will bond with Carlos once he returns from Paris.

"Sana mag bonding tayo ng mama at kapatid mo. Sana mag meet up tayo at magusap tayong lahat," the Yulo patriarch said.
