MANILA — The UAAP is reportedly set to make changes to its policy regarding the transferring of student-athletes between schools and their eligibility.

According to a report by SPIN.ph last week, the proposal says that if a player moves from one school to another, two playing years will now be removed from their college eligibility instead of the present rule that will only require them to exhaust one — with that being their year of residency.

This got the attention of Senator Pia Cayetano, which prompted her to remind the UAAP about Republic Act No. 10676.

“I have read news reports on the supposed plans of the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) to amend its league rules, which may have an effect on the playing years of transferring student-athletes,” she said in a statement on Friday.

The said law was passed in 2015 to address the previous ruling of the league wherein if a player is set to transfer to another institution without the clearance of his former school, he or she would need to sit out two years before being cleared to play.

But now that the proposed rule of the UAAP may have seemed to find a way around the Student-Athletes Protection Act, Cayetano is hoping that the players and their college careers would remain protected.
