MANILA – Aside from carrying the Philippine flag and LGBTQ+ pride in the Paris Olympics, Hergie Bacyadan is also proud to represent Kalinga in the biggest sporting event in the world.

During the send-off ceremony for Paris-bound athletes held by the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) and its official insurance partner on Thursday, the Pinay boxer vowed to her tribe to give her all in the upcoming competition.

"So, amin nga taga-Kalinga, asahan niyo nga lalaengek ti laban ko daytoy dumteng nga Paris Olympics," she told ABS-CBN News.

"Sobrang proud ako na dala ko 'yung tribe ko na Kalinga, and ito na nga, nandito na tayo sa paparating na Paris Olympics. Asahan niyo ang ibibigay kong determinasyon, lakas, and diskarte sa laro and sana masungkit natin 'yung karapat-dapat na medalya para sa 'tin," she also said.

Bacyadan said she grew up in Kalinga until she transferred to Metro Manila.

Born in the town of Tanudan, Bacyadan originally competed in wushu, vovinam, martial arts, and of course, boxing.

The 29-year-old athlete competed in the 2023 Vovinam World Championships and won the gold medal in the women's combat 66 kg division title to become the country's first vovinam champion.

She also won a silver medal in the 2023 Southeast Asian Games in Cambodia.

Bacyadan will be joining Carlo Paalam, Eumir Marcial, Nesthy Petecio, and Aira Villegas to complete the Paris-bound boxing contingent from the Philippines.

Meanwhile, Bacyadan also thanked the local support of her "kababayans" in Kalinga.

"Nagte-thank you ako sa suporta na binibigay nila sa tribe ko sa Kalinga... First time pang nakapasok ang taga-Norte, so ayon, sobrang proud and gagalingan ko pa dito sa darating na Paris Olympics," she concluded.
