MANILA — Senator Sonny Angara made the initiative to start the process of the naturalization bid of Bennie Boatwright for Gilas Pilipinas.

Angara, who also serves as chairman of the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas, filed Senate Bill No. 2646 which seeks to grant Philippine citizenship to the San Miguel Beermen reinforcement.

"Bennie Francois Boatwright III, a 27-year old American-born basketball player who currently plays for the San Miguel Beermen of the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA), has endeared himself to this basketball-loving nation with his combination of explosive athleticism and shooting touch," the Bill read.

"At 6-foot, 10 inches, Boatwright possesses a unique skill set that makes him formidable both offensively and defensively as he has both the ability to stretch the floor and be dominant in the post."

The Senator also vouched for the potential of Boatwright to lead Gilas in various international basketball competitions.

"Boatwright will be a very strong addition to the Gilas Pilipinas squad and will make us even more competitive in international tournaments including the Asian Games, World Cup, and even the Olympics," he said.

Meanwhile, Antipolo City Representative Robbie Puno, who serves as SBP vice chairman, is expected to file the counterpart measure in the House of Representatives.

Once naturalized, Boatwright is expected to serve as the backup of fellow naturalized player Justin Brownlee in the Nationals' current roster.

Aside from them, also included in the naturalized players pool of Gilas are Ange Kouame and Jordan Clarkson.
