MANILA – Collegiate volleyball ace Angel Canino showed what she is capable of on the international stage.

Canino helped Alas Pilipinas capture its first podium finish at the continental level, a feat that was never done in 63 years.

But the humble Canino, who won the Best Opposite Spiker award, revealed Wednesday night at the Rizal Memorial Coliseum that she was not expecting any individual citation as she acknowledged the tough competition in the 2024 AVC Challenge Cup.

"Nagulat ako na naging Best Opposite [hitter] ako kasi knowing this AVC, marami akong kalaban sa spot ko so I didn't expect anything, and hindi ko naman talaga hinabol talaga 'yung itong award na 'to," Canino told reporters as Alas received their bronze medals after a 25-23, 25-15, 25-7 triumph over Australia.

Behind that award was a last-minute adjustment for Canino. The De La Salle University standout was listed to play as opposite this tourney because the outside position, which she played for the Lady Spikers, was already occupied by PVL stars Sisi Rondina, Eya Laure, Vanie Gandler, and Faith Nisperos.

However, for Canino, a debutant for the national team, said she was just out there to make the country proud.

"It's more on making history talaga for the Philippines. And it's more of my teammates din talaga, so credit talaga sa teammates ko, sa management, sa mga coaches kasi hindi ko magagawa lahat ng 'to kung hindi dahil sa kanila," she went on.

The former UAAP Most Valuable Player (MVP) also spoke about her new position and said that she would play any role moving forward and would make up for it.

"Tingin ko naging comfortable naman po ako sa posisyon na 'to [opposite spiker] but what I can say right now, ano mang posisyon ibibigay sa akin in the future, kakayanin ko at gagawan pa ng paraan."

The volleyball star from Bacolod said she wants more experience as she concluded her AVC campaign on a high note.

"Experience po kasi it's a one-time thing. I mean it's a national team, it's a national stint but ano talaga, iba 'to. So part siya ng experience ko and hopefully mas ma-experience pa 'ko ng marami," Canino concluded.
