MANILA – From someone who had a hard time making a name for herself to a member of Alas Pilipinas that made history after ending a 63-year drought of semifinal entry in an AVC competition, it has been quite a career for Cherry Nunag.

The middle blocker from De La Salle-Dasmariñas almost turned emotional when asked about her volleyball story on Saturday.

"Hindi siya madali knowing na hindi ka naging part ng NCAA and UAAP [kaya] hindi madaling bumuo ng pangalan or something. 'Yung ibang tao nagugulat pa, "saan galing itong tao na ito?" So for me happy ako sa lahat ng pinagdaanan ko mula umpisa, step by step and kung saan man ako nandito ako at kung saan pa pupunta 'yung journey at 'yung career ko," Nunag told reporters after a 25-16, 25-13, 25-15 sweep of Iran in the 2024 AVC Challenge Cup at the Rizal Memorial Coliseum.

The win against Iran also propelled Alas Pilipinas to the next round, eventually booking a faceoff against Kazakhstan.

Nunag could not ask for more as she got the chance to help Alas make the most out of this year's AVC run.

"Actually, ito naman talaga 'yung pinakahihintay namin sa volleyball community, na makapasok 'yung national team ng Philippines sa semis kasi ito pa nga 'yung hindi natin nagagawa," Nunag said.

"So for me, it’s a big privilege na maging part ng national team lalo na itong batch na ito kasi sobrang ganda ng performance and 'yung gustong ilabas ng mga bata nakakatuwa, nakaka-inspire, nakaka-proud sila," she added as the Choco Mucho player also spoke high of young talents such as Angel Canino and Thea Gagate.

Nunag contributed four points in the battle against Iran, while she also delivered the same scoring output against Chinese Taipei on Sunday.

Securing a finals berth will be on Alas members' plans when they take on the Kazakhs on Tuesday at the Philippine capital.
