MANILA – De La Salle University star Angel Canino excelled in Alas Pilipinas' debut in the 2024 AVC Challenge Cup.

Tying Eya Laure with a game-high scoring output of 17 points anchored on 15 attacks, one block, and an ace, Canino helped Alas defend home turf against Australian Volleyroos, 22-25, 25-19, 25-16, 25-21, on Thursday at the Rizal Memorial Coliseum in Manila.

Canino previously played as outside hitter; but this time, she was listed as opposite for the national team.

Despite the towering performance in Alas' first game, the former UAAP MVP gave flowers to her teammates and coaches.

"I'm very happy lang kasi siyempre I'm not expecting really sa self ko and hindi ko naman po magagawa lahat ng 'to kung wala po 'yung mga teammates ko," Canino told reporters.

"So credits din sa mga teammates ko po and credits din sa mga coaches kasi they guide me talaga inside and outside the court so sobrang thankful ako sa kanila kasi nandiyan sila para sakin," she added.

Just like captain Jia de Guzman said in a separate interview, Canino said the reason behind the triumph was teamwork.

"I think hindi naman ako 'yung big reason [ng panalo]. The big reason talaga kaya nakuha namin 'yung win na to is teamwork. Kasi given the time na maikli lang 'yung time, 'yung preparation namin pero nagawa namin 'to which is led by coaches and ate Jia [de Guzman] talaga," the 20-year-old spiker said.

Expect Canino not to be holding back this time as she plans to go all out at the international stage.

"Siyempre dati parang sinasabi ko na gigil kasi I really want na bumawi doon sa UAAP ko last game pero talagang sinasabi ko lang sa sarili ko na all-out na ko kasi walang mangyayari kung mag-o-all out ka eh, kung gagawin mo na ikot lang sa loob ka tapos wala kang gagawin. So, I mean sa isip ko all out na, labas mo na lahat ng pwede mong ilabas," said the college standout.

Next task for Alas Pilipinas is India, which has already won two games in Pool A, on Friday at 7 p.m.
