MANILA -- After last year's Empyrean Cup, Riot Games Philippines announced it will be launching a larger league called Liga Republika, as the gaming giant continues campaigns to revive the game's esports scene in the country.

"We wanted to double down on our investment and hyperlocal and truly crate a league for the Filipinos and by the Filipinos. And that my friends is Liga Republika," Riot Games country manager Joel Guzman said during the media launch on Friday morning.

Liga Republika aims to have more than 300 participants in the tournament, with the kick-off coming up this May.

"If Empyrean Cup was a testing ground to see the competitive spirit and gauge the market on how the community sees [League of Legends], think of 2024 as our phase 1 to our plans," Kimi Salazar, Riot Games Philippines' brand manager, said.

There will be a Kickoff Invitational in May, while registration for the open qualifiers will start in June, with the open qualifiers starting in July.

The group stages will be in August, while the playoffs will be in September.

Salazar said they will be holding a separate offline event for the grand finals, compared to Empyrean Cup which held its finals during the Electronic Sports and Gaming Summit.

The tournament will have a P1-million prize pool, with the champions taking the lions' share.
