MANILA – Coach Yeng Guiao explained  what is working for the Rain or Shine Elasto Painters after they notched their fifth win in same number of games after a gloomy 0-4 start in the PBA Philippine Cup.

Guiao said they just try to be in the best shape possible coming into their matches.

"Consistent lang kami sa practice, 'no. We just try to get in the best shape because we are a running team. Pagkatakbuhan ang puhunan mo, kailangang kaya mong itakbo 'yong 48 minutes," the Rain or Shine maestro said after a 115-105 victory versus the NorthPort Batang Pier on Wednesday at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium.

Guiao also underscored the importance of "doing better" in practice.

"Kailangan masipag kang tumatakbo rin sa practice. What you do in the game, we should do it better in practice so pakondisyon, 'no," he said further.

ROS big man Beau Belga exploded for 28 points, resetting his career-high, 13 rebounds, and seven assists also playing on extra minutes for the team that donned a retro jersey at the Manila venue.

"Kita niyo naman si Beau, kondisyon din o kaya kasabay-sabay siya sa [teammates niya], extended minutes nga siya eh."

True enough, Belga was averaging a little more than 31 minutes per contest but played for 38 minutes on Wednesday.

Guiao also praised his team's improvement in free throws, which spelled the difference in their winning streak.

"Nag-improve na rin 'yung free throws namin. Dati 'yun ang problema namin. 'Yung first four losses namin, a lot of those losses were really just missing free throws."

But when asked if his team could compete with the likes of San Miguel, Ginebra, and NLEX, Guiao said they still have a lot to do, especially on staying composed in the clutch.

"Hindi pa. Malayo pa kami do'n. Bata 'yung mga team namin, kailangan masubukan mo 'to, 'yung talagang kayuran 'yung laro, 'yung endgame, 'yung patalinuhan, diskarte," he said.

"So lulutuin mo pa 'no, na talaga, pero maganda 'yung resulta namin ngayon dahil may mga laro kami na dikdikan na nairaraos namin, so sa akin good sign 'yon," Guiao went on. "Good sign din 'yung may lead ka tapos nape-preserve mo."
