MANILA – Alyssa Valdez has nothing but kind words to her former Ateneo de Manila University coach Roger Gorayeb.

The two volleyball icons from Katipunan have once more faced each other on the opposite side of the taraflex, and Valdez was just happy to see his former mentor get his way back in the professional league.

"For me, being able to go up against Coach Roger [Gorayeb] in today’s game, nakaka-overwhelm kasi alam ko rin pinagdaanan niya kung paano siya nakarating ulit dito," said Valdez as Creamline dumped PVL newcomer Capital1, 25-18, 25-14, 25-15, on Thursday at the Araneta Coliseum in Quezon City.

(For me, being able to go up against Coach Roger in today's game, it's overwhelming because I know what he has been through and how he came up here again.)

"[I'm] very, very excited kung ano pa ‘yung mararating ng team niya at mararating ni Coach Roger in this volleyball community, na talagang isa na siya sa pinakamatagal dito kasi naabutan pa siya ni Coach [Sherwin Meneses] e," the indisputably face of volleyball added.

(I'm very, very excited about what he and his team will achieve in this volleyball community, which is one of the longest mentors here.)

The former Blue Eagle also wished Gorayeb good health.

"Coach, magpalakas at magpagaling pa," she said.

(Coach Roger, get stronger and recover more.)

Similarly, Gorayeb said he was just happy to see his former players flourish.

"Natutuwa naman ako. Kaya lang, ayoko nang isipin na (sila) ’yung mga dati kong tinuruan, mga dati kong player. Masaya ako para sa kanila kasi nagpupursigi pa rin sila sa careers nila," the Capital1 mentor said.

(I'm happy, However, I don't want to think that they were under my tutelage. I'm happy because they're doing their best and they flourishing in their careers.)

"Masaya pa rin (kasi) magkakaibigan eh. Binati naman nila ako bago nagsimula ‘yung laro. Sinasabi nila: ‘Coach, huwag kang magpa-stress ah. Masama sayo ‘yan.’ Oh, huwag kayong maglaro." Gorayeb quipped.

(I'm happy because I'm still friends with them. They greeted me before the start of the game. They said, 'Coach, don't get stressed. It's bad for you.' 'Oh, then don't play'.)
