Canadian sports teams like the Toronto Raptors and the Winnipeg Jets have held their own Filipino Heritage Nights to Fculture in their cities.

But this has yet to happen in Vancouver.

That is why Filipino B.C. is spearheading a social media campaign to get the attention of the Vancouver Canucks.

"It's kind of a no-brainer in terms of having a fast growing population here," said Filipino BC chairman RJ Aquino. "The Canucks, I'm sure, would want to increase their fan base and reach out into the community."

Aquino noted that to many newly-arrived Filipinos, hockey is one of their first introduction to Canadian culture.

Many of them have become hockey fans as well.

Aquino added that a heritage night during a Canucks game will be a nod to and a celebration of the contributions of Filipinos to the city.

"It's really a great way to recognize the Filipino community," he said, "its contributions, [and] recognizing that there's a lot of workers also at Rogers Arena who are Filipino, and recognizing the frontline workers."

Filipino-Canadian artist Mar Cortez is among the many Filipino fans of the Canucks who are excited about the campaign.

Cortez, whose bold and brightly-colored art references many Filipino objects, said she would love to design the team swag for the Canucks' Filipino Heritage Night in case this happens.

"I would love to be able to create some art that they can wear on their jerseys to honor our community and our experiences as Filipino- Canadians," she said.

Aquino said the social media campaign is gaining ground and has received positive feedback from the community.

Filipino B.C. is also thinking of repeating this campaign with other sports teams in the province, such as with the Vancouver Whitecaps and the BC Lions.
