MANILA (UPDATED) — Kevin Quiambao took charge for De La Salle University to hand the University of the Philippines its first loss of UAAP Season 87.

The reigning league MVP led the defending champions to a 68-56 triumph over the Fighting Maroons, Sunday evening at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City -- a win that pushed them to the top of the team standings at the end of the first round.

"Coming into this game, sabi lang sa amin ng coaching staff na believe and [have] faith na kaya namin talunin lahat ng team," said Quiambao, who put up an all-around line of 20 points, 10 rebounds, and three assists in their impressive win.

"Yun pagkatalo namin sa UE is a wake-up call na marami pa kaming kailangan i-improve. This game, sobrang gigil kami na makuha itong panalo na ito dahil nga marami pa kaming kailangan i-improve," added KQ.

Tied at 42 after UP's second-half surge that allowed them to erase La Salle's 35-15 advantage, Quiambao and Lian Ramiro sparked a seven-to-nothing run for a 49-42 lead, with the former hitting a triple and lay-in in that spurt.

This eventually led to DLSU regaining their composure as the game ended, with the defending champions eventually regaining a double-digit lead.

This, according to Quiambao, was a matter of the Archers applying the adjustments that their defeat against the Red Warriors taught them.

"Sinacrifice ko yung role ko as a veteran na 'di pala kailangan laging puntos," said Kevin. "Kailangan ko din i-involve yung teammates ko, at simula nung nag adjust kami lahat, madaming good things na nangyari sa amin. Doon namin napagtanto na sundin lagi yung coaches kasi nung first four games namin medyo lihis yung system sa gusto namin gawin," he added.

Moving into the second round, La Salle assistant mentor Gian Nazario said that they must not only apply the lessons of their first seven games, but they must also remain hungry as they continue their path for a repeat.

"We still have a lot to work on and a lot to learn kasi kung masatisfy na kami dito, that would be our downfall. So, I think what's best is these guys will be able to recover tomorrow, and practice na ulit. Yun naman talaga ang kailangan namin eh. Just like what KQ said also, we enjoyed the day, enjoyed the win. But tomorrow's another day," he pointed out.

On the other hand, Harold Alarcon put up 19 markers, five boards, and three steals, while Quentin Miliora-Brown had a 10-point, 10-rebound game for La Salle.

The result of this game put both teams at 6-1, with DLSU being the top seed by virtue of win-over-the-other.
