MANILA — Far Eastern University once again showed glimpses of promise during their defeat against University of Santo Tomas on Sunday during their UAAP Season 87 men's basketball clash.

Despite faltering against the Growling Tigers in a 79-70 loss at the Mall of Asia Arena, it was a player from Morayta whose star shone the brightest as Tamaraws rookie Veejay Pre exploded for 31 points — his career high in the men's division.

"Masaya pa rin kami," said Pre, who also grabbed 14 rebounds and swatted one shot against UST. "Kahit may sakit yung mga kuya namin, at least lumaban pa rin kami."

Some of Pre's teammates -- including star guard Jorick Bautista and bgi man Mo Kanateh -- were battling food poisoning during their game against UST. The situation compelled the young big man to step up, especially on the offensive end.

"Opo, [hinanap ko talaga yung scoring] kasi buong season din nagsu-struggle talaga ako. Buti nakuha ko," said the former Baby Tamaraw, who also revealed that De La Salle University superstar Kevin Quiambao's own career game just the night prior inspired him to show out some 24 hours later.

"Kagabi bago matulog, pinanood ko highlights niya. Tapos sabi ko sa sarili ko: Kaya ko rin kaya yun? Tapos yun po," said Pre.

For FEU head coach Sean Chambers, he is not surprised that his young ace is capable of producing in high volume for his squad.

"If you've seen us in the summer, you know that that's what Veejay is capable of doing," said Chambers. "It's just a matter of him having a breakout game here in the league. But that's what he's capable of. Veejay is a different level player, and he's just getting comfortable in the UAAP."

However, he is challenging Pre to live up to his potential furthermore by displaying killer instinct on the floor.

"The thing about Veejay is he's a very humble kid. He's a hard worker, he works, he listens, and he's disciplined," said the legendary PBA import.

"But he's got to be a little bit more of a take-charge kind of a guy. He kind of wants things to flow for him, but we're trying to impose upon him that his skill level is that good, so he needs to be a take-charge guy and be able to help us win.

Fortunately for the former Alaska Milk superstar, even Pre himself is eager to do this moving forward for the youthful Tamaraws.

"Mabuti po na nakuha ko naman, and hopefully, sana tuloy-tuloy na po ito," said Veejay.
