MANILA, Philippines (UPDATED) – De La Salle University halted University of the East's five-game winning streak and scored a vengeful 77-68 win in the UAAP Season 87 men's basketball tournament on Saturday at the Araneta Coliseum in Quezon City.

This was the Green Archers' way of turning back their first-round tormentors as they also clinched their fourth win in a row.

"The players really fought well. They know the experience of losing to UE. We just rekindled that and reminded them that it will take a lot of effort to really beat this well-coached team. Credit to coach Jack," coach Topex Robinson said during the postgame interview.

They copped their seventh victory in the process and claimed a solo lead in the standings.

Showing the way was big man Mike Phillips, who put up a massive double-double of 27 points and 17 rebounds while reigning MVP Kevin Quiambao chipped in 10 points and six boards. Also in double digits for Robinson was JC Macalalag, who added 10 points.

The Sampaloc-based campus, meanwhile, fell to a 5-3 win-loss card.

UE still held a slim 52-51 lead in the third canto, but a 12-2 blitz from Robinsons' wards allowed them to pull away as they entered the payoff period with a 63-54 separation.

Just when the Red Warriors were returning into the ballgame, the Green Archers got lucky as John Abate committed an uncontested eight-second violation at the 71-65 mark in the final frame.

Phillips immediately swooped in, capitalizing on that UE error, and slammed one home for a 73-65 count. Quiambao and Vhoris Marasigan helped further that cushion and followed through with consecutive baskets to instill a double-digit 77-67 lead.

"The guys just didn’t give up and kept on fighting," Robinson added.

UE's Precious Momowei paced the losing side with 21 points and nine rebounds.
