MANILA -- Hero surfer Roger Casogay is set to receive the Order of Lapu-Lapu award after he helped an Indonesian competitor in a Southeast Asian Games surfing event, Senator Christopher “Bong” Go said Tuesday.

Casogay, who ushered Indonesian surfer Arip Nurhidayat to safety after his ankle leash broke, will receive the distinction in a ceremony in Malacañang on December 18, said Go, President Rodrigo Duterte's decades-old aide and ally.

“That moment is the epitome of the official slogan of the 30th Southeast Asian Games: We Win As One,” the senator said as he sponsored a resolution commending the La Union-born surfer.

“It exemplified the Filipino value of bayanihan,” he said.

Other senators, including Nancy Binay, Joel Villanueva and Richard Gordon, also lauded Casogay’s heroism.

The Order of Lapu-Lapu -- a distinction created through an executive order in 2017 -- is conferred to individuals who are recognized for their “invaluable service in relation to a campaign or advocacy of the President.”

Casogay is expected to receive the Magalong Medal, which is given to individuals who have “rendered extraordinary service or have made exceptional contributions to the success of an activity pursuant to a campaign or advocacy of the President.”

Duterte earlier said all SEA Games medalists will be conferred with the Order of Lapu-Lapu and other incentives.
