ANGELES CITY -- (UPDATED) Storm or no storm, our arnisadors continued to battle their Southeast Asian counterparts for the coveted gold medals.

Cordillera’s Crisamuel Delfin and Palaro vet Mary Allin Aldeguer,​ combined poise and aggression in their respective routines en route to winning 2 gold medals in the anyo (form) non-traditional arnis competition.

Clad in an Igorot warrior costume, Delfin wielded a pair of traditional swords while swishing his way to collect an average of 9.87 points. This merited him a mint in the eyes of international arnis judges.

“Talagang pinaghandaan namin para makamit natin ‘yung ginto na gusto naming kunin,” the 25-year-old said.

Aldeguer also wore an Igorot-inspired costume while securing the mint with an average of 9.64 points.

Aldeguer, a pride of Rizal province and a veteran of several Palarong Pambansa competitions, managed to pull off the win despite hurting her ankle shortly before her performance.

“Nung una before ako um-entry, natapilok ako. Kaya nung pumasok ako hindi ko na inisip kung may masakit, laban kung laban. Nung nag-perform ako medyo nagkamali pero hindi ako nagpahalata nung second time na ginawa ko ‘yung move,” she said.

Vietnam’s Van Huynh Ngo finished second in the men’s non-traditional arnis, while Myanmar’s Yar Zar Tun and Cambodia’s Sila Chhem tied for bronze.

Meanwhile, Vietnam’s Tho Hoa Trieh secured the silver in the women’s non-traditional arnis, as Myanmar’s Waing Sheilar Ming and Cambodia’s Soulmala Eng settled for bronze.

Ryssa Jessel Sanchez and Mark David Puzon also secured silver medals in the women’s and men’s traditional anyo, respectively.

Philippine arnis now has a total of 14 gold medals, breaking past its 12-medal prediction.
