FOSHAN, China -- A costly loss by China to Poland kept the door open for Gilas Pilipinas to qualify to the 2020 Tokyo Olympics via the FIBA World Cup.

The highest-ranked Asian team at the end of the FIBA World Cup -- outside of Japan, which is already qualified as the host -- will punch a ticket to the Summer Olympics next year, and China appeared to have an inside track after taking a late lead against Poland on Monday night in Beijing.

But Poland rallied to take the win in overtime, 79-76, preventing China from progressing to the second round. Had China won, the host nation would have been assured of the Olympic berth.

Instead, the Philippines still has a chance, for as long as it beats Angola in its final group round game on Wednesday, and China also loses to Venezuela in its own assignment.

However, Gilas Pilipinas coach Yeng Guiao insisted that the Olympics are the farthest thing on their mind at the moment.

"Mahirap kasi isipin pa 'yun eh. Siguro what we can only do now is focus on the next game, and then after that, focus on the next two games," he said.

The Philippines can no longer qualify to the second round, having lost by big margins to Italy and Serbia in Group D. It wraps up its group round schedule against Angola on Wednesday, before traveling to Beijing for the classification phase.

"So kailangan lang isipin namin 'yun," he said.

In Beijing, they will play the two lower ranked teams from Group C -- including fellow Asian squad Iran.

"There are a lot of factors that will come and there are a lot of factors that we cannot control. So, ayoko muna mag-speculate doon sa Olympic berth," said Guiao.

If the Philippines fails to secure an Olympic berth through the World Cup, they can still do so through an Olympic qualifying tournament. The 16 best remaining teams in the World Cup, along with two teams per region, will compete in four qualifying tournaments next year ahead of the Olympic Games.
