The new-look Navotas Clutch rode the crucial hits of Levi Hernandez and his accuracy from afar to derail the Pasay Voyagers, 83-75, in the Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League (MPBL) Datu Cup at San Andres Sports Complex in Manila Saturday.

Despite having only Ron Dennison and Rey Publico back from last year’s team, the Clutch showed poise and cohesion in the fourth quarter where they weathered the Voyagers’ final assault.

Hernandez, former star of Arellano University who saw action for TNT in the PBA, scored 10 straight points bridging the third and fourth quarters to give the Clutch their biggest lead at 67-57.

The Voyagers rallied behind RR de Leon and Yvan Ludovico, but the most they could do was to move within 75-71, with 1:20 to go.

Navotas coach Richie Ticzon said most of his players maybe new, but they are familiar with his system, particularly on ball rotation.

“That’s how our system works. There’s plenty of ball movement,” Ticzon said.

The 6-foot-1 Hernandez wound up with 26 points, while the 6-foot-4 Publico, who regaled the crowd with a two-handed slam in the fourth quarter, made 22 points and 9 rebounds.

“I gave him (Publico) more freedom and responsibility,” said Ticzon.

The Voyager of coach Cholo Martin jumped to an 11-0 spread and padded it to 25-13 early in the second quarter.

But the Clutch, powered by Publico and Hernandez, trimmed the gap, 34-32, at halftime.

Hernandez and RR De Leon of Pasay traded triples as the third quarter ended at 60-57, Navotas ahead.
