REDONDO BEACH, Calif.—Jonas Sultan is a fearless warrior. Toughened up by street fights, he shows no respect for anybody, not even world champions, inside the ring.

That’s why, Edito Villamor, head trainer of ALA Boxing, has given Sultan the leeway to apply the pressure on Jerwin Ancajas when they tangle for the International Boxing Federation super flyweight crown on May 26 in Fresno, Calif.

“He has this no-respect attitude whenever he fights,” said Villamor, noting that the same daredevil approach carried Sultan to victory over former world champion John Riel Casimero in their title eliminator for the right to challenge Ancajas for the 115-pound crown.

According to Villamor, if Casimero, who is more of a pressure fighter, can’t throw punches on the retreat, then this all the more poses a problem for Ancajas, a notable ring tactician.

“Jerwin is good, but he’s not a pressure fighter,” Villamor said Saturday. “Casimero is more of a pressure fighter, but he can’t throw punches on the retreat against Sultan.”

“He has the heart of a champion,” added Villamor. “No respect whatsoever.”

Villamor, who is being assisted by brother Edmond in whipping Sultan into optimum form at Wild Card Gym in Hollywood, said he could only hope that the pride of Zamboanga del Norte will deliver their game plan hatched in Cebu and fine-tuned here for the past 3 weeks.

“We’ve done everything needed to win. There will be no excuses.” said Villamor, who praised Sultan for his dedication in training.

Though given the option to spend time with his family when the fight, originally set April 14, was moved to May 26, Sultan chose to continue training in Cebu, worried that if he takes a break, he might go back to square one in form.

ALA strength and conditioning trainer Nick Curson, who is based here, charted a training program intended to complement the Villamors’ game plan. It includes nutritional assessment, recovery period and plyometrics.

Villamor bared that they also applied the same techniques against Casimero and another former world champion, Sonny Boy Jaro, but with more refinements.

Sultan’s ability to switch fighting stances should also give Ancajas some trouble, according to Villamor.

“It’s hard to read his style and Jerwin knows it,” said Villamor. “It’s a skill he acquired in numerous colorum (streets fights) in Zamboanga.”
