The chief of the Davao regional police paid tribute on Wednesday to his late father, who was also a policeman, after the 16-day raid that eventually led to the surrender of televangelist Apollo Quiboloy.

Davao Region police chief BGen. Nicolas Torre and PNP Chief Gen. Rommel Marbil offered wreaths at the Bantayog ng mga Bayaning Pulis inside the Camp Quintin Merecido in Buhangin, Davao City on Wednesday.

Torre noted that his late PMSgt. Rodolfo Torre was among the police officers who died in duty and whose names were engraved in the memorial inside the police camp.

The elder Torre died in an ambush in Lutayan, Sultan Kudarat in 1990.

"I want to share with you that one of the names on that stone is the name of my father, Master Sergeant Rodolfo Torre, a member of the PC Ranger, whose motto is, 'Always outnumbered but never outfought,'" BGen. Torre said in his speech.

"Nagpapasalamat ako sa inyong lahat, sa inyong mga sakripisyo noong nakaraang linggo (I am grateful for all of you and your sacrifices for the past few weeks).Together, we show the country and the world what the Philippine National Police can do," Torre added, addressing officers.

Torre noted that no officer died in the 16-day search for Quiboloy at the Kingdom of Jesus Christ compound in Davao City, despite tension between the police and the group's members.

"I am the happiest person that we did not add another name in this memorial. Naisagawa natin ang operasyon ng mapayapa at walang namatay sa atin," he said.

Quiboloy, whose sect claims millions of followers, is facing charges in Manila of child abuse, sexual abuse and human trafficking.

The US also charged the Kingdom of Jesus Christ preacher in 2021 with sex trafficking of girls and women aged 12-25 to work as personal assistants, who were allegedly required to have sex with him.

He has denied the allegations against him, saying the women made the accusations because he had rejected them. -- With a report from Agence France-Presse
