Weather bureau PAGASA on Monday placed more areas under tropical cyclone wind signal 1 as severe tropical storm Carina (Gaemi) continued to enhance the southwest monsoon.

As of 11 a. m., the following areas were under TCWS #1. 

Batanes

Eastern portion of mainland Cagayan (Santa Ana, Gattaran, Baggao, Peñablanca, Lal-Lo, Gonzaga) 

Eastern portion of Babuyan Islands (Camiguin Island, Babuyan Island)

Northeastern portion of Isabela (Divilacan, Palanan, Maconacon)

Carina was spotted 355 kilometers East of Tuguegarao City, Cagayan. Packing 110 kph winds and up to 135 kph gusts, Carina is showing strong to storm-force winds extending outwards up to 340 km from the center.

The weather bureau said Carina would reach typhoon category within 12 hours but would remain far from the Philippine landmass. 

It will leave the Philippine area of responsibility on Wednesday evening or Thursday morning.

Rainy week ahead as Carina enhances habagat

PAGASA said the extreme northern portion of mainland Cagayan would experience 100-200mm (nearly 4 to 8 inches) accumulated rainfall, while Babuyan Islands and the eastern portions of mainland Cagayan and Isabela will experience 50-100mm (nearly 2 to 4 inches) accumulated rainfall from Monday to Tuesday noon.

The weather bureau said the southwest monsoon enhanced by Carina would bring moderate to intense rainfall over parts of western Luzon from Monday night to Wednesday.

The habagat will also bring strong to gale-force gusts over the following areas, especially in coastal and upland areas exposed to winds. 

• Monday: Zambales, Bataan, Aurora, MIMAROPA, Bicol Region, Western Visayas, Northern Samar, and the northern portion of Samar.

• Tuesday: Ilocos Region, Zambales, Bataan, Aurora, Metro Manila, Calabarzon, Mimaropa, Bicol Region, and Visayas

• Wednesday: Ilocos Region, Abra, Benguet, Apayao, Nueva Vizcaya, Quirino, Isabela, Central Luzon, Metro Manila, Calabarzon, Mimaropa, Bicol Region, and Visayas
