"Vets suspect that the gun wound was from an improvised 'jolen' or marble gun that was fired while the eagle was perched," said the foundation.

The hit caused shattered the bones in the eagle's left wing.

The troops and DENR staff rushed Magayon from the patrol base to the Compostela Municipal Hall, where they met the PEF rescue team.

They gave the eagle, which was already lethargic, initial treatment before transporting it to Davao for further treatment.

But the eagle later succumbed to his injuries, the group said.

The foundation urged the government to apply stricter measures to curb the killing of eagles.

The Philippine eagle, also known as the "monkey eating eagle," is a critically endangered species.
