MANILA – Gases from Taal Volcano could cause vog or volcanic smog in nearby areas in Batangas, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said on Friday.

Taal belched 11,072 tonnes of sulfur dioxide from 12 a.m. Thursday to 12 a.m. Friday, Phivolcs Director Dr. Teresito Bacolcol said.

“This is quite high… That’s the reason why may mga na-observe na haze,” he told TeleRadyo Serbisyo.

“Baka magkaroon ng vog kasi according to PAGASA, hihina po ang daloy ng hangin. Kapag mabilis naman yung hangin, yung sulfur dioxide mabilis mag-disperse. Kanina, ang hangin natin is mabagal, nasa 2 meters per second lang,” he added.

He advised residents around Taal to prepare face masks and drink lots of water if they inhale sulfur dioxide.

Asked if this was an indication that Taal could erupt, Bacolcol said, “Wala pa namang pangamba na pumutok ang bulkan.”

He noted that only one volcanic earthquake was recorded at Taal in the last 24 hours.

Volcanic earthquakes indicate that magma or molten rocks are rising towards a volcano’s crater, he said.

KANLAON

Taal’s unrest is not connected to the recent eruption of Mount Kanlaon in Negros island, Bacolcol said.

From 12 a.m. Thursday to 12 a.m. Friday, 14 volcanic earthquakes were recorded around Kanlaon, lower that the 27 quakes logged the previous day, Bacolcol said.

Volcanologists have to observe Kanlaon for at least 2 more weeks before they could lower its alert level, he said.

Kanlaon exploded Monday evening, sending a plume of ash, rocks and gas 5 kilometers into the sky.

Some 4,000 people have been evacuated from their homes around Kanlaon due to falling ash, gases and the threat of lahars, Negros Occidental Governor Eugenio Jose Lacson said.

“The longer this lasts, it will become more stressful financially especially for the LGUs concerned. Food packs have been coming in, but we hope for continued support. I think the most important right now is water,” he said.

The state volcanology agency has raised the alert level for the volcano from one to two on a zero-to-five scale, warning more explosive eruptions were possible.

The Philippines is located in the seismically active Pacific "Ring of Fire" that contains more than half the world's volcanoes.

Kanlaon is one of 24 active volcanoes in the archipelago nation. – With a report from Agence France-Presse
