Amid a public outcry, authorities have launched an investigation into the killing of Killua, a 3-year-old pet dog whose bloodied body was found inside a sack in Camarines Sur.

In an interview with ABS-CBN News, Bato Municipal Police Station (MPS) Chief of Police PMaj. Ronald P. Brugada assured the public that a thorough investigation was underway to uncover the circumstances surrounding Killua's death.

“Ina-assist namin yung complainant. Kung ako mismo, gusto ko i-file yun kaya ina-assist. Malaking tulong yun (video) kasi kung makikita nyo ang video, parang inaamin niya (suspek) kung paano niya nagawa," said Brugada.

(We are assisting the complainant. I personally want to file a case, that's why I'm assisting. The video is a big help because you can see there that the suspect looks like he's admitting why he did it.)

On Sunday, March 17, social media platforms were abuzz with the hashtag #JusticeforKillua as netizens rallied behind the dog's family which posted on Facebook a video where a man was seen arguing with the family as he stood beside the dog's lifeless body.

The next day, the family uploaded another video showing the same man chasing and hitting the dog.

Killua's family explained in a FB post that their fur baby was not accustomed to being outdoors and likely fell from their terrace and wandered off.

Apart from the police, the family has also sought support from the Philippine Animal Welfare Society (PAWS).

Under the Animal Welfare Act of 1998 as amended by Republic Act 10631, “any person who subjects any animal to cruelty, maltreatment or neglect shall, upon conviction by final judgment, be punished by imprisonment and/or fine, as indicated in the following graduated scale: (1) imprisonment of 1 year and 6 months and 1 day to 2 years and/or a fine not exceeding 100k if the animal subjected to cruelty, maltreatment or neglect dies."
