(UPDATED) Fourteen people have been confirmed killed after being buried by landslides in Sitio Purok B, Bgy. Sampaloc, Talisay, Batangas, after days of heavy rains brought by Severe Tropical Storm Kristine.

Talisay Mayor Nestor Natanauan said the fatalities include 12 minors.

Several houses were buried when a part of the hill surrounding the village collapsed, sending mud and boulders cascading down the houses. Witnesses said the landslide happened very fast and some of the residents were unable to escape.

Rescue teams are still digging through the mud and debris but the rest of the emergency response crews are having a hard time reaching the area as the highway leading to the village is still covered in mud, littered with vehicles and other debris.

In Batangas province, around 5,000 families or  17,700 individuals sought shelter in 266 evacuation centers while 1,402 families are outside official shelters.

Tropical cyclone Kristine made landfall in Divilacan, Isabela early Thursday morning and continued its path westward, devastating several provinces along the way.

More than 3.3 million Filipinos have been affected by the onslaught of STS Kristine all over the country, with thousands still reeling from the effects of the storm, the Department of Social Welfare and Development said Friday.

Batangas Governor Hermilando Mandanas said in a text message that they are set to declare a state of calamity to speed up relief and recovery efforts.
