MANILA — The provincial government of Cagayan on Wednesday urged the public to heed evacuation advisories from the government, saying that floods, landslides and storm surges threaten the province as Tropical Storm Kristine barrels across Luzon.

Cagayan is facing 3 secondary hazards because of Tropical Storm Kristine, namely floods, landslides and storm surge, said Ruelie Rapsing, head of Cagayan Province Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office.

“Dahil sa hazards na yan, we will be deploying our assisting agencies, especially sa mga coastal municipalities natin especially sa areas that are highly susceptible sa flood and rain-induced landslide,” he told state television PTV.

“Knowing that we are the catch basin dito sa Region 2… Kung kayo po ay pupuntahan ng mga lokal na opisyal para dalhin sa safer na lugar, sumama po kayo para po sa inyong kapakanan ito,” he said.

Seven quick response stations have been set up across Cagayan as Kristine is forecast to plow through parts of the province by 5 p.m. of October 23, Rapsing explained.

“Wag po kayong mag-alala, prepared po ang inyong pamahalaang panlalawigan, gayon din yung mga local government po natin,” he said.

“Naka-predeploy na doon yung ating mga land at floating assets together with our quick response personnel, pati na rin yung engineering team ng province,” Rapsing stressed.

“Naka in-place pa rin yung food and non-food items from the barangay, local government at maging sa provincial government,” he added.

Heavy to torrential rains will also batter Northern Luzon, Aurora, and Quezon on Wednesday, while moderate to heavy rains will be experienced in Metro Manila and the rest of mainland Luzon, northern Mimaropa, and Northern Samar, state weather bureau PAGASA earlier said.

At 10 a.m. Wednesday, Tropical Storm Kristine was located 200 kilometers east of Casiguran, Aurora, with winds of 85 kilometers per hour and gusts of up to 105 kph. It is moving north-northwestward at 30 kph.

Kristine is forecast to make landfall over Isabela on Wednesday evening as a severe tropical storm.
