MANILA — Residents near Mayon Volcano in Albay province have been advised to be on alert as state volcanologists warn of potentially hazardous lahar flow in the coming hours or days due to the heavy rains forecast to unleash by Tropical Storm Kristine.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) before Tuesday noon issued a lahar advisory for the active Mayon Volcano because of the storm Kristine, which has already spawned intense rains and flooding in many parts of Bicol and Northern Samar even as it has yet to hit landmass.

Phivolcs in the advisory said Kristine's heavy to intense rains over Bicol Region and Eastern Visayas from Tuesday to Wednesday night "could generate volcanic sediment flows or lahars, muddy streamflows or muddy run-off in rivers and drainage areas of Mayon Volcano."

It said that potential lahars and sediment-laden streamflows could occur along the Miisi, Binaan, Anoling, Quirangay, Maninila, Masarawag, Muladbucad, Nasisi, Mabinit, Matan-ag, Bonga, Buyuan, Basud, and Bulawan channels in Albay.

Phivolcs said that lahars from Mayon Volcano could threaten communities along the middle and lower slopes and downstream of the volcano's channels with "inundation, burial and washout."

"DOST-PHIVOLCS thus strongly recommends increased vigilance and readiness of communities in pre-determined zones of lahar and related hazards on this volcano," it said.

It urged communities and local government units of the identified areas to monitor storm conditions and take preemptive measures if needed.

As of 10 a.m. on Tuesday, Kristine was located 335 kilometers east of Virac, Catanduanes. It is projected to move generally northwestward until it makes landfall over Isabela or northern Aurora on Wednesday night or on Thursday early morning.

Mayon Volcano meanwhile is on Alert Level 1 or low-level unrest, as of Tuesday. It released 1,064 tons of toxic sulfur dioxide on Monday, October 21.

Phivolcs said the volcano could suddenly make steam-driven or phreatic eruptions despite the first-level alert.
