Weaker Julian now a typhoon, threatens Taiwan

Julian has weakened into a typhoon and continues to move slowly towards Taiwan Wednesday, weather bureau PAGASA said.

As of 4 a.m., the center of the eye of Typhoon Julian was estimated based on all available data at 280 km West Northwest of Itbayat, Batanes outside the Philippine area of responsibility. 

Packing 165 kph winds and gusts of up to 205 kph, Julian is forecast to turn northeastward towards the southwestern coast of Taiwan, where it is expected to make landfall Wednesday night or Thursday morning. After landfall, Julian is forecast to move erratically over the landmass and coastal waters of Taiwan before emerging over the Taiwan Strait on Friday evening or Saturday early morning.

Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal no. 1 remains in effect over the following areas:

Northern and western portions of Ilocos Norte (Pasuquin, Sarrat, Paoay, Bangui, Vintar, Burgos, Pagudpud, Bacarra, Currimao, Adams, Pinili, San Nicolas, Dumalneg, Laoag City, Badoc, City of Batac),
Northwestern portion of mainland Cagayan (Santa Praxedes, Sanchez-Mira, Claveria)

A gale warning is hoisted over the northern seaboard of Northern Luzon.
