Vilma Santos is marking her 6th decade in showbiz and treating her fans to several onscreen projects including atwo-part special that aired last March 11 and 18 via ABS-CBN’s Cinema One. Hosted by seasoned talk show host Boy Abunda, the offering, which is titled Anim na Dekada: Nag-Iisang Vilma, traced back to Vilma’s 60 fruitful years in entertainment.

In the interview, the superstar-turned-politician talked about how honored she is to have been bestowed films and roles that have cemented her footing in the industry and shared how she used to crawl the sloping trails that the younger generation, she believed, are simply just walking now. “Noon, tinrabaho namin ’yun,” Vilma told the audience.

Ngayon, nakikita kayo sa TFC, right?” she address the new-age talents. “Kami noon, wala. Para makilala kami, talagang buong Pilipinas iniikot namin. Ang tawag namin, ‘personal appearance.’ Kung saan-saan kami nagpupunta para ipakilala ’yung [mga] sarili namin at makita kami ng mga tao,” she persisted, highlighting the hard work that she toiled.

Despite the innumerable milestones that she has achieved throughout her career on television and in cinema, Vilma Santos remains a humbled soul who perceives herself as someone who is only human. When asked who she is when no one is watching, Vilma replied: “Tao rin—katulad nating lahat,” she began.

From being a child star phenomenon to a coveted A-list actress in the Philippine soil, she snagged Best Actress and other major accolades in local and international film festivals and prestigious annual awards like Metro Manila Film Festival, FAP, Gawad Urian, and FAMAS.

Some of Vilma’s most notable performances include her very first, Trudis Liit (1963), where her scenes with supervillain Bella Flores landed her the FAMAS Best Child Actress award in 1963. Her portrayal of the iconic Filipina superheroine in Lipad, Darna, Lipad! (1973) was one of the high points of her acting achievements, too.

Another one of her memorable roles was in the 1977 Metro Manila Film Festival’s top grosser Burlesk Queen (1977), which reigned superior as it captured the most awards in the MMFF at the time, including Vilma’s Best Actress stint. Bata, Bata… Pa’no Ka Ginawa? (1998), Anak (2000), and Dekada 70 (2002) were also some of the veteran talent’s hit blockbusters.

Hindi ibig sabihin [na] si Vilma Santos ako na nilalagay nila sa pedestal, [hindi na ako tao]. At the end of the day, kapag nasa bahay ako, wala kayong lahat, tao pa rin ako—nasasaktan, nagkakasakit, natutuwa, umiiyak, nagkakaroon din ng problema,” she continued. “Kahit sabihin pa nila na si Vilma Santos ay ‘Star for All Seasons,’ tao pa rin ako.”

Happy 60th anniversary in the industry, Ate V!
