Song Joong Ki in his Song Joong Ki in his 'Queen of Tears' cameo

Spoiler alert!

Song Joong Ki had a cameo in the ongoing Netflix K-drama Queen of Tears, and it was hilariously epic! He shared the screen with lead stars Kim Soo Hyun and Kim Ji Won in the episode 8 of the rom-com series, as their characters Baek Hyun Woo and Hong Hae In, respectively, discussed their divorce. And wow, the special appearance lasted for more than three minutes! With this episode, according to Nielsen Korea, the series hit an all-time high average nationwide rating of 16.1 percent.

Song Joong Ki, Kim Soo Hyun, and Kim Ji Won together in one scene is reason enough to not miss this hit K-drama's latest episode, but the context behind their onscreen moment made it more memorable.

Here's everything we loved about Song Joong Ki's cameo in the K-drama Queen of Tears:

Song Joong Ki and Kim Ji Won's onscreen reunion

Song Joong Ki and Kim Ji Won portrayed characters who are each other's love interest in the fantasy period drama Arthdal Chronicles (season 1). Before that, they were also co-stars in the South Korean series Descendants of the Sun.

The Vincenzo reference

Song Joong Ki, who starred in the 2021 K-drama Vincenzo, appeared in Queen of Tears as his character Vincenzo Cassano, an Italian lawyer and mafia consigliere of Korean descent. As seamlessly incorporated in the scene, Song Joong Ki as Vincenzo was depicted as the divorce attorney representing Kim Ji Won's Hong Hae In.

As the divorce lawyer and friend of Kim Soo Hyun's Baek Hyun Woo (Moon Tae Yu's Kim Yang Ki) briefed him on the lawyer Hong Hae In is working with, we couldn't help but miss our favorite 'corn salad' (IYKYK).

The Song Joong Ki and director Kim Hee Won connection

Queen of Tears is co-directed by Kim Hee Won, who was also the director of Vincenzo. Song Joong Ki also had a cameo in the 2022 K-drama Little Women (by the same director) as an Italian shoe store salesman (whose name was Park Joo Hyeong, Vincenzo Cassano's Korean name), which also hinted at subtle references to Vincenzo; Park Joo Hyeong (Song Joong-ki) was adopted by an Italian family and was renamed Vincenzo Cassano.

Director Kim Hee Won is known for putting 'Easter eggs' in her projects, so it's always fun discovering the references she thoughtfully incorporates—and we're delighted to have come across more Song Joong Ki references in this Queen of Tears cameo. Read on.

The references to Song Joong Ki's previous characters or projects

In case you didn't notice, Vincenzo wasn't the only Song Joong Ki character or project referenced in this Queen of Tears cameo. As Song Joong Ki's Vincenzo stepped out of the elevator, looking dapper in a classic pinstripe suit and gentlemanly as he ushered Kim Ji Won's Hong Hae In, Moon Tae Yu's Kim Yang Ki began introducing Vincenzo to Kim Soo Hyun's Baek Hyun Woo. Scenes that followed recreated Song Joong Ki's mafia character in his well-loved series.

'He's a terrifying man... There are many rumors about who he is. The youngest heir of a conglomerate family. A former soldier stationed abroad. Someone who came here on a spaceship. Others say he's a werewolf. His name is Vincenzo. And he is... He's from the mafia... And he's a consigliere... I heard he doesn't negotiate in words.'

Kudos to the show's screenwriter, Park Ji Eun, who was also behind K-drama classics My Love from the Star, The Producers, The Legend of the Blue Sea, and Crash Landing on You.

The funny Vincenzo Cassano-versus-Baek Hyun Woo scene

As Kim Yang Ki said, Hong Hae In probably wanted Baek Hyun Woo dead. So, viewers were treated to an imaginary scene where Vincenzo was pointing a gun at Baek Hyun Woo's head. And Song Joong Ki delivered his lines in true Vincenzo fashion: 'Mr. Baek, you deceived my client. A couple of divorce papers won't make up for that. I'm sorry to say this, but evil should be countered with evil.'

Song Joong Ki also had cameos in K-dramas The Sound of Your Heart and Man to Man. His latest project is the Netflix drama film My Name Is Loh Kiwan.
