The ABS-CBN Ball is back with a bang with a new chapter, and Kapamilya newscaster Gretchen Fullido will host the Red Carpet Special happenings once more. The much-awaited affair is opening its doors to gather the biggest and brightest stars of Philippine showbiz, and great things are sure to transpire.

“I’m so excited for the return of the ABS-CBN Ball this year. After four years, we’re going to be back on the red carpet,” Gretchen declared. “I’m so honored because this year, I’ll be hosting again with Bianca Gonzalez and Edward Barber for the Red Carpet Special on September 30, so it’s going to be so great!” she shared in an exclusive sit-down talk with Metro.Style.
“I’m so excited for the return of the ABS-CBN Ball this year. Even before the birth of ABS-CBN Ball, Gretchen has been attending the Star Magic Balls in the past, so she was at the peak of excitement when she learned that the latest ABS-CBN Ball is entering the social scene again. Fired up, she aspires to make a core memory with everyone and mark the event with nothing but a night of sharing and socializing.

“I missed the fashion. I missed seeing the faces. It’s been quite a while since the pandemic so it’s just good to see everyone again in the flesh,” she said. “I’m so excited about that—to see a lot of friends; ask them what’s the latest in their career, what’s happening in their life.”

Gretchen also added that besides being Master of Ceremonies, she missed the kind of evening where she just keeps on enjoying, too: “I’m just really so excited to see everyone and hug them, kiss them, dance with them, and celebrate the night away at the ABS-CBN Ball.”

Apart from attending the star-studded gathering, Gretchen is taking her time to prepare for the Ball as well. After all, she wants to be the best that she can be at her craft. “Oh my gosh, I’ve been attending since the very beginning!” Gretchen mused, calculating. “Actually, every year is very special. Every look is special, and I could really see my fashion evolution over the years.”

My heart is full of joy and gratitude.”

How hands-on are you when deciding what outfit to wear at this event?
“I’m very hands-on every year for the ABS-CBN Ball with the outfits that I want to wear. First of all, I ask what the theme is. If there’s no theme, I collaborate with my designer and this year, I’ll be wearing Francis Libiran again. I’m so excited to collaborate with my very, very dear friend. I really, really love the way he plays with the looks I do every year so it’s going to be a surprise for what I’ll be wearing, so stay tuned and see it on the ABS-CBN Ball.”

“Definitely, it’ll be something that you know is very Gretchen and of course—[with] touches of Francis Libiran—so it’s just going to be an exciting collaboration. I’m so excited because it’s been technically four years since we last dressed up for the Ball and I just want to be able to move, dance, and enjoy the night away, so it’s definitely going to be comfortable. That’s one thing for sure, and it’s going to be something very me, and the colors would be something vibrant.”

I was super tanned because I was training for triathlon—for swimming—and I was really tanned that we really got the whole J. Lo peg. I was pretty happy about that and I was so fit that time, so I miss that Gretchen. Hopefully, in a couple of days, we’ll be able to achieve that look. Hopefully, but definitely not the tan! It’s super far!”

What’s your typical ritual when attending formal events like the Ball?
“I usually prepare a lot in terms of researching because usually, I host the Ball and cover it for TV Patrol, so it’s dual purpose for me, for ABS-CBN News, and TV Patrol. Rituals would be, try to get as much sleep as I can and not to get so stressed—I mean, preparing for the Ball in itself. I’m not just attending, I’m hosting it. And, the red carpet event is really free-flowing. It’s free for all, so you really got to know what you’re doing, memorize, know all the artists—the new artists, the up-and-coming artists—and of course, pay respect to the veterans. It’s really a big, big challenge for me but I’m always so excited for the job and it gives me a lot of anxiety but it’s a good kind of nervousness. I really want to do well and do my best every year when I host the Red Carpet Special.

The pandemic has really changed a lot of our perspectives and I’ll be seeing a lot of the for the first time, so I’m just excited to see them in the flesh, talk to them, catch up with them, and really just take that moment to bond and to be in the moment and be at the Ball and just be like [what] our tagline says—‘forever grateful.’ What a special event because this will be for the benefit of the ABS-CBN Foundation, so not only are we seeing and catching up with everybody but we’re also helping everyone and the beneficiaries. It’s all about thanksgiving and meaningful storytelling.”
